Asma Hussain once revealed that she grew up watching her mother stitch clothes. At the age of 6, she learned to operate sewing machines.

Asma Hussain is one of the famous Indian fashion designers who belongs to the royal family of Awadh and is a descendant of Shuja-ud-Daula. She displayed her first collection in 1994 and founded the Asma Hussain Institute of Fashion Technology (AIFT) in Uttar Pradesh. However, instead of being known for her royal legacy, she is also known for her incredible work.

She is widely recognised for her clothes which have been worn by many famous personalities like Bollywood’s yesteryear actress Saira Banu, Kirron Kher, Shabana Azmi and even the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Aditynath. As per reports, in 1996, her fashion house was inaugurated by the then-famous Bollywood star, Dev Anand.

The Asma Hussain Institute of Fashion Technology is recognised by the Government of India’s National Council for Vocational Training. Asma Hussain once revealed in an interview that she grew up watching her mother stitch clothes. At the age of 6, she learned to operate sewing machines. She claimed that this is the reason why she developed an interest in sewing clothes and with age, her interest turned into a knack.

Asma Hussain further claimed that she left the profession of doctor midway to come to Lucknow in 1993 and focused on her dream of becoming a designer. She began to work as a fashion designer in Lucknow and her quest to bring back the lost culture and heritage of the city with her craft began. She said that when she came to Lucknow, it was difficult to find artisans who could do fine and delicate work. She visited the different corners of the country to see the various artwork and learned the work which is done by hand.

After 1995, her life took a new turn as on the advice of her friends, she established Asma Hussain Institute of Fashion Technology in Hazratganj and even started teaching what she loved doing the most. Asma Hussain taught design courses to the students, who are now employed in different countries.
