Former Google DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman recently assumed the role of CEO of Microsoft AI. He co-founded the UK-based AI research lab DeepMind, which was acquired by Google in 2014. Suleyman also founded Inflection AI in 2022 before joining Microsoft AI in March of this year.
Microsoft, CEO, Satya Nadella appointed Suleyman in March 2024 to manage the company’s consumer AI products and research, which included Copilot, Bing, and Edge.
On April 7, Suleyman revealed in his first blog post as CEO of Microsoft AI that the business will create a new office in London dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) research and development. He stated that Microsoft AI London will lead efforts to build cutting-edge language models and associated infrastructure.
“Microsoft recently announced the creation of Microsoft AI, a newly formed organization to help advance our consumer AI products and research, including Copilot. Building on that news, I’m thrilled to share that Microsoft AI is opening a new AI hub in the heart of London,” Suleyman wrote.
As per the blog post, Microsoft AI London will lead pioneering work to build cutting-edge language models and their supporting infrastructure, as well as to provide world-class technology for foundation models, working directly with our AI teams throughout Microsoft and with our partners, including OpenAI.
An accomplished AI scientist and engineer, Jordan Hoffmann, will lead the new AI hub, the blog post mentions. Hoffmann rose to prominence as an AI pioneer at Inflection and DeepMind, both based in London, before joining Microsoft AI. He will be accompanied by a skilled group of Microsoft AI team members working in our London Paddington office.
According to Suleyman, the United Kingdom has a vast reservoir of AI talent and expertise, and Microsoft AI intends to make a large, long-term commitment to the region as they begin employing the top AI scientists and engineers for this new AI hub.
In the following weeks and months, they will announce employment positions and actively seek extraordinary candidates who want to work on the most intriguing and hard AI challenges of our time. They are searching for new team members who are motivated by large-scale impact and passionate innovators who want to contribute to a team culture that values continual learning, the blog post adds.
