New Delhi: R Chandrasekhar, the president of the Indian software industry's lobbying group NASSCOM, has said he hopes the Donald Trump administration takes a "pragmatic" view about the H1B visa issue.
"We are here to engage with the administration and Congress and to dispel some of the myths about the movement of high skilled workers," Chandrasekhar told CNN's Maggie Lake in an interview. “We hope they take a pragmatic and open minded view," he added.
A number of high level CEO's from various Indian technology firms are in Washington DC on Monday meeting with officials from the Trump administration. India's foreign secretary S. Jaishankar will hold "wide ranging bilateral discussions" with American officials on the H1B visa issue and the safety of Indian nationals in the US after suspected hate crimes against Indians.
Chandrasekhar told CNN said that it was incorrect to say that the tech industry in America was reluctant to hire American workers. "There is a shortage of skilled workers in America and that is what the H1B programme is filling," he said.
Chandrasekhar added that the H1B programme has created more jobs in America than it has destroyed.
