Recruiter's take: 4 skills that will get you hired in business development
Now even techies are required to possess a certain percentage of business quotient.

New Delhi: It's good news for job aspirants looking for a business development profile! Whether a burgeoning company or a cash cow, of late every organisation is eyeing talent with business development skills. As organisations realise the importance of hiring human capital with a knack for business, the profiles and roles in business development push afar boundaries confined to sales and development. Now even techies are required to possess a certain percentage of B.Q. (read: business quotient). Nonetheless, the requirement for Business Development Executives and Managers is on the rise. We, at CareerBuilder, take a look at the most prominent skills that will get you hired for the role:

Be Friends with Stress: An hour-long interview with people determined to test your patience can kill your eagerness to get hired as a business development manager. But then, you must remember that it is your ability to handle stress that they are evaluating. You better fair well in this one, because they are looking for someone who can cope with such situations on a daily basis.

Key: Learn to focus on the outcome, rather than on the situation. It is likely that people (with frowning faces) turn to you for solutions to a problem that seems to have no solution. That's what the interviewer will check you for.

Cultivate the "We" Attitude: Each business development decision takes "collective effort". It's not a one-man show. Your MBA classes might have taught you the art of brainstorming; a business development profile is where you actually apply it. In a business developer's role you will often have to work with a team of people who otherwise do not gel well.

Key: Turn the "M" in "Me" upside down and exhibit that you are a team player. You will be scoring some extra points on team player skills.

Time Management: Well, half your job is done if you reach on time to the place of the interview. A business development profile requires you to be up and running, and on your feet, most of the times. Time management is one art that no one has ever perfected. How do you score on this one?

Key: Ok, we are ready to share the secret with you all. Actually, you can never manage time. Instead, show them your task management skills. That shall definitely win them over.

Skill to Sell: First things first, a business development manager should not fall short on creativity and persuasiveness. You will be tested on this ability most of the times, through most of the questions. One common question "How will you sell yourself for this job?"

Key: So, how do answer that question? There is no fixed answer for that one. But remember to answer creatively. Don't go for the normal "skills that will sell". Instead hint that you will "sell" because "you are in demand". Speaking from a recruiter's point of view, most companies are looking for people with a certain skill set. A predefined attribute set that most hirers are targeting include the above four, plus ability to stay informed and demonstrated business development skills. Now even if you are not confident about each and every key skill that the JD lists, some smartness and a pleasing personality will cover up for the flaws.
