In Maharashtra’s Solapur, siblings Uma Birajdar and Rudrappa Birajdar have turned cow urine into a lucrative venture, earning lakhs of rupees. Inspired by spiritual values, the duo established a cow shelter in Vadakbal in the South Solapur area. Their initiative not only generates significant income but also provides employment to 250 to 300 women from self-help groups. The siblings also launched cow service projects in their fields, showcasing an innovative approach to both business and community service.
Benefits of Cow Urine
The benefits of cow urine have long been a subject of debate. While some people are firm believers in its advantages, others remain skeptical. However, Uma Birajdar, a professor from Solapur, has demonstrated the value of cow urine through her work at the Katwadevi Cow Shelter.
Significance of Khillar Cow Urine
At the Katwadevi Cow Shelter, cow urine is collected every morning before sunrise. The urine of the indigenous Khillar cow is particularly valued for its potential health and agricultural benefits. It is also used in religious rituals, such as ‘homa-havan’ and puja ceremonies. Additionally, cow urine is employed in traditional practices to remove ‘sutak‘ following a death.
Cow Urine Essential for Organic Farming
Farmers cultivating grapes, mangoes, and various crops, as well as those growing leafy vegetables, fruits, and other produce, visit Uma Birajdar’s Katwadevi cowshed to obtain cow urine. According to Birajdar, cow urine helps combat crop diseases, making it highly sought after by organic farmers.
Current Pricing and Products
Currently, cow urine is priced at Rs 30 per litre. Farmers purchase it directly from the cowshed. Additionally, a byproduct called Gonine, derived from cow urine, serves as a mosquito repellent, floor cleaner, and room freshener, and is high in demand. The women of Mahila Bachat Samuh, a self help group, also benefit from employment opportunities related to these products. By year’s end, the total turnover from cow-based products is expected to reach Rs 3 to 4 lakh. Birajdar noted that there is growing awareness about the benefits of cow-based agriculture.
