Everyone Told me My Deliveries Require Pace but Nobody Said How to do it: Kuldeep Yadav
Kuldeep Yadav accounted for the wickets of David Warner and Glenn Maxwell in Chennai.

Kuldeep Yadav has said while everyone kept pointing out the area that he needed to work on during a phase that saw him struggle with form and injury but there nobody suggested how he could improve on it.

A few years back, Kuldeep was told to increase his pace after leaking runs in limited-overs cricket so as to become more effective.

“Everyone told me my deliveries required pace but no one told me how to do it,” said Kuldeep after India’s win over Australia in their first match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Kuldeep had sustained a knee injury during the IPL 2020 and was told he has to reduce the load on his right leg.

“Once I was coming back from injury, it was physio Ashish Kaushik who advised that the load on my right leg should be less,” Kuldeep said.

“Post rehab, I implemented that in my training and then in match situations and I felt the difference. It didn’t happen overnight though. It took around six months to get the rhythm back,” he added.

The Chennai pitch was quite helpful to the spinners and Kuldeep said it was important to vary pace to be effective on it. “Important aspect on a turner is the speed at which the ball turns. At times there are slow turners, important is to vary pace,” the 29-year-old said.

Kuldeep though disagreed that the track was a slow turner.

“I don’t think so, but yes, I had to increase the pace of my deliveries. For example, Glenn Maxwell didn’t get time and if you saw how (Steve) Smith got bowled (to Ravindra Jadeja). So, along with turn, pace on deliveries also become important,” Kuldeep said.

Kuldeep took two crucial wickets during the match including that of David Warner and Maxwell.

India played three spinners and together they accounted for six Australian wickets.  However, Kuldeep feels including three spinners in the eleven won’t be the case for the entire tournament.

“Not sure about the entire tournament, but over the years, we have seen you can play with three spinners in Chennai,” he said.

Australia played one specialist spinner in Adam Zampa with allrounder Maxwell serving as the second option.

“If other team had three quality spinners, it would have been difficult for us as a batting unit as well. I think Maxwell bowled well but he didn’t have support from the other end. In ODI format, you need to keep hitting the stumps and it’s important for any spinner. It’s okay to bowl a bit wide in Tests,” Kuldeep said.
