Tamil Nadu’s Dindigul Witnesses Increased Production Of Puffed Rice Amid Festivities
The puffed rice is offered as prasadam or is transformed into sweets and other dishes, during the festive season.

The nation is currently indulging in festivities to celebrate Ayudha Puja and Vijaya Dasami, on October 23 and 24 respectively, with great fervour and enthusiasm. On this occasion, more than 20 markets in Tamil Nadu’s Dindigul district have begun selling tonnes of puffed rice produced in the state.

This is because the demand for pori or puffed rice is very high during these festivals. The puffed rice is offered as prasadam or is transformed into sweets and other dishes, which makes it a highly in-demand food item during the festive season.

It needs to be noted that the puffed rice produced in Dindigul is sold in various districts of Tamil Nadu including Vellore, Chennai, Madurai, and Salem. In addition to that, what caught the attention of the public is that despite the increase in the price of raw materials required for the production of puffed rice, the manufacturers and sellers have not increased the overall price of the same.

To prepare the puffed rice, first of all, rice is soaked in salt water for the whole day; followed by the same process again on the second day. However, the quantity of salt water is comparatively high on the second day. Then, on the third day, the rice is processed in the field, which is then placed inside the oven to prepare the puffed rice on the fourth day. The rice, once taken out of the oven, is processed for a while. The process of placing it inside the oven is repeated twice or thrice depending on the requirement.

These puffed rice are then packed in bundles and exported to various districts. This year, tonnes of puffed rice have been prepared ahead of the festive season. One of the workers indulging in the production of the food staple urged the government to provide loan assistance for the growth of the industry, which will further help in improving their livelihood.
