Dhruv Jurel was one of the finds for the Indian national cricket team during the five-match Test series against England, which the Rohit Sharma-led side won 4-1.
Dhruv Jurel had won the Player of the Match award for his heroics in the fourth Test at the JSCA International Complex Stadium in Ranchi, the hometown of MS Dhoni.
Jurel hit the winning runs for India in the Ranchi Test against England helping India seal its 17th consecutive series win at home. The Agra-born was drafted into the team for the last three Tests of the series at the expense of KS Bharat, and after a solid 46 in his debut innings at Rajkot, Jurel hit a gritty 90 in the first innings of the Ranchi Test and then proceeded to add vital 39 not out with Shubman Gill to steer India to victory from a tricky position.
During the clash, Sunil Gavaskar compared the youngster with Dhoni on commentary.
“Watching the presence of mind of Dhruv Jurel makes me think he’s the next MS Dhoni in the making,” Gavaskar had said.
Dhruv Jurel though played down comparisons to MS Dhoni at the India Today Conclave 2024.
“Thank you so much Gavaskar sir for comparing me with Dhoni sir. But I want to say personally that no one can replicate what Dhoni sir has done. There is only one Dhoni. Always was and always will be. For me, I just want to be Dhruv Jurel. Whatever I do, I want to do as Dhruv Jurel,” he said.
“But Dhoni sir is a legend and he will always remain like that,” said Jurel.
Gavaskar though when asked about his comments drawing parallels between Jurel and Dhoni, had clarified that there can never be another MSD but Jurel has shown signs of a bright future.
“The way he thinks about the game, the way he assesses the situation and bats accordingly, gives me the MS Dhoni feels. He would hit a six in between and then look for ones and twos to rotate the strike… Even in keeping, the way he gathered that wayward throw and ran out Ben Duckett and then took a brilliant catch of Jimmy Anderson who went for the reverse sweep. When MS Dhoni was of his age, he too had the same situation awareness. And that is why I said, Jurel is like MS Dhoni. No one can become MS Dhoni. There is only one MS Dhoni. But if Jurel can manage to do even some portion of the things Dhoni did then it would be great for Indian cricket,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying on Sports Tak.
