Following Yashasvi Jaiswal’s fantastic century which allowed India to take a significant lead in the second innings of the Rajkot Test, a former England skipper, went on to make a big statement on the youngster’s future and what his greatest challenge will be if he is to be classed among the greats of the game.
Jaiswal came in on the third day at Rajkot and continued to showcase his talent and potential by digging India out of a tough situation following the dismissal of Rohit Sharma. The Indian skipper went on to be dismissed by Joe Root after England went on to take the DRS which eventually fell in their favour.
The youngster then took the game on along with Shubman Gill to rack up a 155-run stand. A highlight during the partnership was how Jaiswal was able to freely play his shots at will taking on both pace and spin with ease to get his third Test century.
I don’t see a single weakness in Jaiswal’s game in Indian conditions. His greatest challenge is going to be scoring runs away from home.
To be classified as a great player at the end of your career, you gotta get 100s away from home in ALL conditions.

His first Test series at home has been a fantastic one. Currently, he has racked up 435 runs which include the double-century in the previous Test and the ton he scored in the ongoing match. Former English skipper, Kevin Pietersen had posted on his official handle on X where he said,” I don’t see a single weakness in Jaiswal’s game in Indian conditions.”

A class batter during his time, Pietersen also revealed what Jaiswal’s biggest challenge in his career is going to be. He added,” His greatest challenge is going to be scoring runs away from home.”
So far the 22-year-old has played in the West Indies and South Africa. He debuted in the longest format during the Test series at the Caribbean where he scored 171 on debut and a half-century as well. But he did not have similar fortunes in South Africa. In the two Tests he played in South Africa, Jaiswal has only managed to score 50 runs across the four innings he has batted in.

Pietersen thinks that for any batter to be considered amongst the greatest they have to be able to deliver across any conditions much like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli and the other notable batters in Indian cricket history.
The ex-English captain concluded by saying,” To be classified as a great player at the end of your career, you gotta get 100s away from home in ALL conditions.”
The youngster is still young and made his debut in the Test format back in July 2023, but all signs show that he is likely going to take up the role of opener for India in the future as well. Even the likes of Virat Kohli also struggled in certain conditions but was able to bounce back and deliver. Fans will hope Jaiswal can do the same as well as time goes by.
