Known for his no-nonsense attitude, on and off the field, batting legend Gautam Gambhir has tasted success both as a player and as member of the backroom staff. In IPL, he has proven his credentials having overseen Kolkata Knight Riders title-winning season earlier this year after spending a couple of productive years with newbie Lucknow Super Giants – a franchise that made it to the playoffs twice in a row when he was their mentor.
Thanks to his success in IPL, Gambhir then emerged as the top candidate to succeed Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, a role he bagged in July this year.
The white-ball tour of Sri Lanka was his first in-charge of the team and it was a mixed affair with India winning the T20I series but losing the ODI series that followed. Now, he’s gearing up for his first Test assignment as India coach with a two-match series against Bangladesh starting September 19 in Chennai.
And former India allrounder Ajay Jadeja feels that with Gambhir at the helm, there will never be a dull moment as he’s someone who is always trying to move the game in forward direction.
“It is very clear, his (Gambhir) approach is aggressive,” Jadeja told reporters in Kolkata. “One thing is sure, there will never be a dull moment with him around, he will always try something. He will do what he believes.”
“He (Gambhir) will not be somebody who will sit back and let things flow. He will be out there, he will try things like we saw Suryakumar Yadav becoming captain suddenly. I am looking forward to the excitement we are going to see this year,” he added.
When asked what advice he will give to Gambhir, Jadeja hopes the former India captain won’t listen to any suggestions.
“I hope he does not take suggestions. The reason why he is there is because of what he did and how he looks at it. I hope he does not take anybody’s advice and change his approach because what has made you who you are is something that you should believe in and stick to. He can always get better,” Jadeja said.
