'...It's Very Embarrassing': Virat Kohli Requests RCB Fans to Stop Calling Him 'The King'
Virat Kohli makes a request to the fans and the people not to call him the 'King' as it makes him feel embarrassed.

With a new name and a new outfit, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will get back on their unaccomplished mission, to bring the cup home, as Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 begins Friday. The season opener will see them locking horns with defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk on March 19. Before flying to Chennai, the stars of RCB assembled at their home ground, M Chinnaswamy Stadium, to unveil the change in the team name and the newly designed kit at the Unbox Event. The men’s team also gave a guard of honour to the women’s team, led by Smriti Mandhana, for winning the first-ever Women’s Premier League (WPL) title.

It was a star-studded event with Virat Kohli being one of the centres of attraction. And when he was asked to address the gathering, the crowd was frenzied. The spectators broke into loud chants of ‘Kohli-Kohli’, so much so that the former RCB skipper had to wait for them to calm down.

Danish Sait, who was moderating the event, asked Kohli about the ‘King feeling’. The question ignited the fans again but when the ace batter began with his answer, he requested one and all to not use that word (King) anymore.

“Let me talk. Guys, we have to get to Chennai tonight. We have a chartered flight so we don’t have time (laughs). Firstly, you need to stop calling me that word [King]. I was telling Faf that it is very embarrassing for me when you call me that name every year, just call me Virat,” Kohli said.

‘Dream of Mine to Know How It Feels Like Winning IPL Trophy’

Now that the RCB women have won the WPL trophy, the fans would expect the men to get inspired and push themselves to lay their hands on the IPL silverware. Kohli has represented the franchise for 16 years and has not managed to win a single title.

Speaking at the event, Kohli said he hoped to emulate the RCB women’s WPL winning feat and add the IPL trophy to the team’s cabinet in the upcoming edition of the league.

“It was absolutely amazing. When they won it (WPL), we were watching. Hopefully, we can double it up with the trophies and that will be something truly special,” Kohli said.

Kohli, the highest run-getter in the IPL, said his commitment to RCB and high-intensity approach would remain unwavering.

“It is because of the way we play our cricket, our commitment and the passion that we saw over the years that we have such a fanbase. So, that’s not going to change and that’s my promise every year to the fans, to the team and to everyone involved,” he added.
