After the thrilling opening contest between the Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Chennai, the defending champions managed to walk away with a win to begin their title defence on a positive note.

Here is the points table, orange cap standings and purple cap standings following the opening fixture.

RCB’s Anuj Rawat led the orange-cap race as he went on to score a brilliant 48 runs at an aggressive strike rate of 192. His knock was a crucial one as the Bengaluru franchise went on to post a defendable target of 174 runs. The experienced Dinesh Karthik also chipped in with 38 runs to build a partnership worth 95 runs to rebuild the innings.

For CSK, it is the IPL debutant who impressed with a quick-fire knock of 37 runs to start their chase off on a flying note. He was able to find the boundary regularly to give the home side the perfect start as they went on to chase down the target and get the win.

In the purple-cap standings, it is the Bangladesh pacer for CSK, Mustafizur Rahman, who began his first game in yellow in fine fashion. He picked up four wickets to put the home side in front for most of the first innings. In his very first over, he got the wickets of Faf du Plessis and Rajat Patidar to pile the pressure on the visitors. He was able to do this further by picking up two more wickets in his second over by getting Virat Kohli and Cameron Green in his second over as he finished with figures of 4/29 in his quota of four overs.

For RCB, it is the big-money signing, Cameron Green who was able to get two wickets but was expensive as he gave away 27 runs in his 3 overs. But the visitors were unable to get the win.

As far as the points table goes, the Chennai Super Kings are currently on top after the only fixture. They went on to beat RCB by 6 wickets to take the win. They have also added to their net run-rate which could prove to be a deciding factor in the later stages of the tournament.
