A National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) aspirant from Uttar Pradesh has died by suicide in Rajasthan’s Kota. The student identified as Uruj was a resident of the Samdhan village of Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj, officials said. The 20-year-old was living in Kota for the last year where he was preparing for the medical entrance exam from a coaching institute. This was the sixth case this year.

The student’s family called him repeatedly on Tuesday, but he did not respond. After that, they called his friends living in the Jawahar Nagar area who rushed to the building and informed the owner living nearby about the student not taking calls. A guard went to the student’s room, and after he did not respond, they called the police immediately. The police reached the building and broke open the door. Uruj’s body was found hanging from the fan. Vigyan Nagar police officials said the student scored average marks in his studies.

Further investigation on the matter is currently underway.

Around 28 students died by suicide in Kota last year. While around 15 students died by suicide in 2022.

Earlier, a group of coaching institute directors had met with the Kota district collector to seek clarification regarding the guidelines issued by the state govt for running the centres. According to the memorandum, the competent authority for the registration of coaching centres has not been mentioned in the guidelines. Furthermore, the directors said that online registration has been made mandatory but there is no website for it. They also highlighted that the opinions of coaching institutes and students be taken into account before framing guidelines to protect the rights of both.
