Clint Dempsey doubled the visitors' advantage in the 39th when the United States international turned in a ball from Jermain Defoe inside the six-yard box. Southampton got a goal back in the 66th when Jay Rodriguez scored from close range but Tottenham hung on for the victory.
Tottenham, which had lost all five previous visits to St. Mary's Stadium, moved up to fourth place in the standings on 17 points while Southampton remained 19th with four.
