London: Arsenal have offered Frenchman Thierry Henry a two-month contract to return to the Premier League club he left in 2007.
Henry, now with the New York Red Bulls, has been training with the Gunners in a bid to maintain his fitness during the MLS off-season, and has reportedly impressed former boss Arsene Wenger with his sharpness and attitude.
The 34-year-old has apparently been given a temporary return on a two-month loan deal as Wenger looks to lighten the scoring burden on the in-form but injury-prone skipper Robin van Persie.
Wenger had been mulling over whether to take back the club's all-time leading goalscorer to boost his side's chances of finishing in the top four, The Daily Mail reported.
With out-of-form Moroccan Marouane Chamakh and Ivory Coast's Gervinho being called up for national duties in the African Cup Nations, the Arsenal front-line suddenly looks very thin.
Henry, after an eight-year stint with the London club, left to play in Spain with Barcelona. However, after being restricted to the bench for the majority of his stay, he moved to the Major League Soccer (MLS) and joined the New York Red Bulls in 2010.
If the Frenchman does decide to take up the offer, he could feature in seven Premier League games as well as FA Cup ties and the first leg of Arsenal's crucial Champions League last-16 clash against AC Milan.
FC Koln striker Lukas Podolski has also been widely linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium in the New Year, but Wenger is believed to have decided a short-term deal to bring back club legend Henry represents less of a gamble.
Henry, now 34, remains Arsenal's all-time record goalscorer with 226 goals to his name between 1999 and 2007, and his outstanding contribution was recently honoured with the unveiling of a statue outside the Emirates Stadium.
