Madrid: Real Madrid attacker Cristiano Ronaldo has said that winning trophies is more important to him than individual success and added that he is not in a personal competition with Barcelona star Lionel Messi.
The Portugal international revealed that he has great admiration for Messi, but he does not feel the pair are in a battle to be the best.
"I do not compete with Messi, I compete with myself and with all the teams in the league," Ronaldo told Cadena Cope.
"Messi is a great player who is on a great team that has great players. He is someone I like a lot and can be the best because he has shown it."
Ronaldo scored a remarkable 53 goals for Real Madrid in all competitions last season, breaking the league record in the process. However, Messi led Barcelona to domestic and European titles, and the Portuguese claims he would trade in the goals for another trophy.
"I would prefer to have scored half the goals and won the league or the Champions League," he said. "But I've felt more comfortable than last year and, individually, this was perhaps my best season."
The Portuguese star also stated that the gap between Spain's top two teams is diminishing.
"They won because they were the best, but no team is unbeatable. Barca have a great team and a good coach, but we'll get there. We want to beat them and difficult things bring a different pleasure."
