Man United step up chase for Charlie Adam
Doubts are emerging as to whether Scholes will sign a new contract at Old Trafford.

London: Manchester United are lining up a summer swoop for Blackpool playmaker Charlie Adam with uncertainty surrounding the future of Paul Scholes beyond the end of this season.

Goal.com UK understands that United have made an enquiry for the player in recent weeks and are ready to battle Liverpool and Tottenham for his signature at the end of the season.

With doubts emerging as to whether Scholes will sign a new contract offered by the club – an extension to his current deal has been on the table since the turn of the year – Sir Alex Ferguson is giving strong consideration to making a move for Adam.

The Scot has been scouted extensively by United this season and fits the bill as a midfielder capable of creating and scoring goals.

Ferguson commented that Adam’s "corner-kicks alone are worth £10 million," after he created both of Blackpool’s goals against United in the Premier League leaders’ 3-2 win at Bloomfield Road in January.

The midfielder was instrumental in Blackpool’s promotion to the Premier League last season and has been hugely impressive in their against-the-odds top flight campaign, scoring 10 goals, including five since he was denied a move to Liverpool in January.

During the winter transfer window, Liverpool had a £10m bid for Adam rejected and Spurs ran out of time in their deadline-day bid to land the Seasiders’ captain.

Both clubs are expected to make further moves for the 25-year-old in the summer, when he will have just 12 months remaining on his Blackpool contract.

Blackpool have valued Adam at £14m, despite paying just £500,000 to sign him from Rangers in 2009.

Manager Ian Holloway has accepted that the Scotland international will leave Bloomfield Road in the summer, whether the team escape relegation or not.
