What can go wrong, will go wrong: this seems to be the story of Manchester United this season, as the Red Devils find themselves in the midst of another ugly mess that arose from within the club itself.
Injuries and poor results aren’t the only things plaguing United any longer, as the club is now also facing legal charges against them from internal staff members themselves for a breach and leak of personal information.
The Reds of Manchester are being sued for up to £100,000 for accidentally emailing 167 staff their wage slips and those of everyone else in the pool.
The concerned staff’s details such as their name, address, National Insurance number, earnings and tax contributions were all leaked as a result of a blunder back in March 2018.
It is reported by The Sun that the club were trialling a new system with “a lack of managerial staff overseeing the procedure.”
The snafu led to members such as those in catering and hospitality, museum and stadium tour staff as well as programme sellers receiving the mail.
The legal counsel of a firm which represents 32 claimants involved said: “The club’s billionaire owners should take responsibility for this error.”
Those affected have now lodged a High Court compensation claim on grounds of data protection.
A spokesperson of Manchester United came out to address the issue and stated, “We take the data privacy of our employees very seriously and regret this isolated incident, which occurred in 2018.
“Measures were put in place to prevent it happening again and we informed the Information Commissioner’s Office, which took no further action.”
In the midst of an already tumultuous season on the field, this internal mishap only adds more fuel to the already set-ablaze United, who are fighting for their place in the top four of the Premier League table in order to secure Champions League qualification next season.
United currently stand sixth in the PL table, eight points behind Unai Emery’s Aston Villa and will face off against title contenders and perennial rivals Liverpool in the upcoming weekend.
