Manchester United are expected to make some modifications to the squad during the January transfer window, with bolstering the attack being their top target. To strengthen the forward department, the Red Devils signed Rasmus Hojlund from Italian side Atalanta last summer. The deal is yet to be proven beneficial as the Danish striker has managed only 6 goals in 24 appearances since shifting his base to Old Trafford. With boss Erik Ten Hag desperate to bring in more attacking resources, Manchester United are reportedly keeping their eyes on Lille striker Jonathan David.
According to a report by Football Transfers, the United hierarchy is “very interested” in snapping up David during the winter transfer window. The outlet further claimed that another Premier League outfit Aston Villa may also join the race to secure the signing of the Canadian youngster. Both English clubs have been kept updated about the current situation of David, who is also eager to part ways with Lille, the report added.
Manchester United have failed to showcase their A-game in the attacking third this season. Not only Hojlund but Marcus Rashford also looks out of form, forcing Ten Hag to search for more forward options. The Red Devils earlier scouted Jonathan David in the summer of 2023 as an alternative to former Tottenham striker Harry Kane. The English captain ultimately joined Bayern Munich on a four-year contract worth more than £100 million with add-ons.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa are hoping to land a forward partner for their first-team striker Ollie Watkins. The 28-year-old has already established his stature as one of the most promising players in the Premier League. Since joining Aston Villa in September 2020, Watkins has made a total of 144 appearances across all competitions, scoring 57 goals and providing 23 assists. If the club manages to secure the services of David, it will no doubt add an additional strength to their forward line.
Apart from Manchester United and Aston Villa, AC Milan is another top European club who are reportedly interested in Jonathan David. The Serie A giants are looking for a permanent replacement for Olivier Giroud. The 37-year-old French striker may draw curtains on his decorated career after the Euro 2024. No matter how much AC Millan offers to David, the 23-year-old may choose to begin his career in England.
