Turkish Goalkeeper Mert Gunok deserves much credit for his side’s win over Austria in the Round of 16 of the ongoing Euro 2024. Gunok pulled off a stunning save in the final phase to help his side claim a 2-1 victory in the knockout game in Leipzig.
Late in the game, Austria’s Christoph Baumgartner received an aerial pass inside the opposition penalty box. The 24-year-old headed the ball, targeting the far post. Gunok showcased great reflex as he jumped to his right and denied the last-minute chance. A video of the event was later shared by the UEFA Euro’s official X account. “Mert Günok’s incredible 95th-minute save,” read the post.

Many fans reacted to the post and branded Mert Gunok’s effort as “one of the greatest saves” in the history of the European Championship. One of them was quick to call it “the best of the tournament.”
Another fan admitted that it was the best match of the Euro 2024 tournament and thanked Turkey and Austria for producing a neck-and-neck battle.
“One of the best ever examples of a clutch save I have ever witnessed. Perfection under pressure,” lauded another fan.
Another person calculated that Christoph Baumgartner’s header was worth 0.94 xGOT (Expected Goals On Target). It means “a goalkeeper would only be expected to save the effort 6 percent of the time.”
Turkey made a commanding start to the Round of 16 fixture. Centre-back Merih Demiral broke the deadlock with 57 seconds on the clock, recording the second-fastest goal in European Championship history. Austria increased the pace of the attack after conceding the early goal but failed to equalise in the first half. Merih Demiral once again stepped up in the 59th minute and increased the lead for Turkey with a close-range finish.
Following the strike, Austria looked more dangerous and came up with back-to-back attacks. The breakthrough finally came in the 66th minute when Michael Gregoritsch slotted it home capitalising on a corner kick. The scoreline remained unchanged till the final whistle, with Turkey securing their place in the quarter-finals of the European 2024. They will face the Netherlands in the quarterfinals on Sunday, July 7 in Berlin.
