Under the scanner after being accused of 'attempt to rape' and 'physical harassment' by his fiancee, India captain Sardar Singh has found much needed support from Hockey India (HI).
A 21-year-old girl from the United Kingdom, who herself is a hockey player and claims to be engaged to Sardar, on February 1 filed a police complaint against the iconic India veteran.
The two allegedly met during the London 2012 Olympics and have been seeing each other since then. But the girl claims that after forcing her to abort a pregnancy, Sardar has stopped responded to her calls or messages despite getting engaged with her in the presence of his family last year.
However, an influential HI official has come out in support of the national captain, who is currently leading the Punjab Warriors team in the Hockey India League (HIL).
"I can't interfere in anobody's personal life, but I know of the situation for the last two years," the official told IBNLive. "She has been stalking him for the past two years, and the coaches have also noted that - be it Roelant [Oltmans], [Terry] Walsh or [Paul} van Ass. She was at times also told to leave the team hotel."
On the issue of the girl alleging to have carried Sardar's child, which she aborted, the official said that's a mere allegation and an attempt to "blackmail".
"This girl is blackmailing him; that's the factual situation. This is what players and officials have told me. Sardar has my full support on this issue
"She says she has undergone abortion. Was it done in India? If yes, where is the proof? Was any DNA testing done?" the official questioned.
The complaint filed by the girl is being verified by Ludhiana police. However, the complainant's lawyer PS Hundal said that it's a cognisable offence, and the police can take action soon.
"This is a case under Section 376 of the IPC. She has filed a complaint at the Kum Kalan police station...It's a cognisable offence. The police can file a case after a small inquiry," Hundal told IBNLive.
Sardar, who is travelling to Chandigarh with the Punjab team for their home match on February 4 remained unavailable to tell his side of the story. But reportedly he has admitted to the relation and rubbished allegations of any kind of assault or harassment.
