Anne Hathaway Calls Christopher Nolan ‘Angel' For Saving Her Career After Online Bullying
Anne Hathaway revealed filmmakers backed out from casting her over her negative reputation and credits director Christopher Nolan for much-needed support.

After facing harsh criticism for co-hosting the 83rd Academy Awards in 2011, Anne Hathaway was called toxic. Despite this setback, two years later, Hathaway returned to the Oscars stage, this time she won her first Academy Award for her role in Les Miserables. Despite the success, Hathaway continued to face mockery. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the Devil Wears Prada star revealed that her Oscar debacle had repercussions on her career, as many filmmakers backed out from casting her due to concerns about her negative online reputation. However, Hathaway credits director Christopher Nolan for giving a boost to her career amidst the backlash. The actress is referring to Nolan’s 2014 epic Interstellar where she played the key role of NASA scientist Dr Amelia Brand, alongside Matthew McConaughey’s character Cooper.

Hathaway said, “A lot of people wouldn’t give me roles because they were so concerned about how toxic my identity had become online. I had an angel in Christopher Nolan, who did not care about that and gave me one of the most beautiful roles I’ve had in one of the best films that I’ve been a part of. I don’t know if he knew that he was backing me at the time, but it had that effect and my career did not lose momentum the way it could have if he hadn’t backed me.”

Discussing the challenges of facing negativity, Anne Hathaway shared her perspective on overcoming humiliation and stated that despite the hardships, one must remain brave and open-minded. Further, the actress compared the experience with walking on a tightrope or being a daredevil, highlighting the risks involved in an acting career. However, Hathaway feels that they must offer something valuable to audiences who invest their time, money and attention.

Hathaway has often praised Christopher Nolan, especially after collaborating with the director in two films. In an earlier conversation with Emily Blunt for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Hathaway admired Nolan’s authoritative approach to filmmaking and recounted a particular scene when they were shooting for The Dark Knight Rises. Hathaway recalled how Nolan explained his vision for the shot which he had planned for years.

Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan recently received multiple Oscars for his film masterpiece Oppenheimer. On the other hand, Anne Hathaway is gearing up for her upcoming project The Idea of You, where she stars alongside Nicholas Galitzine. The film is scheduled to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on May 2nd.
