It seemed inevitable that someone would portray Senator Katie Britt of Alabama on NBC’s Saturday Night Live this weekend, following her much-discussed GOP reply to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech on Thursday. With Britt’s speech viral because of the politician’s rambling speech patterns and false claims, the issue now was who would draw on the satirical potential of the speech. As it happened, actress Scarlett Johansson, a two-time Academy Award nominee and six-time SNL host, executed the act.
In the opening scene of the spoof, actors Mikey Day as Joe Biden and Ego Nwodim as CNN’s Abby Phillip delivered succinct speeches in which Biden said that Britt’s reaction would benefit him “more than anything else I can say here.”
Although the actual Britt, according to CBS News, disapproved of many of Biden’s stances on politics and stated in her reply that he had “been in office for longer than I’ve been alive,” Johansson’s portrayal highlighted some of her similar sentiments.
Johansson quipped that she was “auditioning for the part of scary mom” and “performing an original monologue called, ‘This country is hell.’” The footage was taken in a kitchen, just like Britt had when she taped her own reaction to Biden’s State of the Union.

“You see, I’m not just a senator,” Johansson went on. “I’m a wife and mother, and the craziest bitch in the Target parking lot.”
“I’m worried about the future of our children, and this is why I’ve invited you into this strange, empty kitchen. Because Republicans want me to appeal to women voters and women love kitchens.”
Johansson continued to imitate Britt, stating that she had just seen President Biden’s address with her husband Wesley and that she had perceived it as an act by a “permanent politician.”
“But me, I’m not performing.” she said, gesturing dramatically with her hands, “I’m not.”
She also joked that since she is a mother, she will suddenly tell a startlingly brutal story about sex trafficking, just like any other mother would. She continued, saying that every aspect of it is true, with the exception of the year, place and president at the time.
The “American dream” has become a “nightmare,” she continued.
Johansson continued to poke fun at Britt, claiming that she and her spouse Wesley spend a lot of time worrying in this kitchen since that’s where families have the important talks. Similar to the one they’re having tomorrow, she continued, about how “mommy freaked out the entire country.”
Biden, she said, is the one ruining the United States. “Just ask yourself — are you better off today than you were four years ago, back in the good ole’ days of 2020, the year that nothing bad happened?” Johansson continued.
Johansson’s character broke into song for a brief moment before mentioning that she tells her kids every night that “they’re steeped in the sweat of patriots in a castle made of bones.” As she continued, she stirred a spoon around a teacup and made an allusion to Jordan Peele’s Get Out, which made Kenan Thompson react.
She added that the American people, who are currently struggling, should know that we hear, see and smell them in their kitchen, going through their refrigerator.
She continued by assuring the President of the United States that thiswas not the last time he would see Katie Britt.
“Maybe not in politics, but when you close your eyes, I’ll be right there,” she said.
