How to Know if You’re Therian
You feel disconnected from your human body. Therians are so strongly connected to a certain animal that they identify as that animal on a spiritual or psychological level. If you’re a therian, you may feel completely out of place in your human body. For example, you may feel strongly that you were meant to be a wolf or that you should have paws instead of hands. Many therians refer to this feeling as “species dysphoria.” If you experience species dysphoria, you may feel depressed, have body image issues, or even experience hallucinations where you’re living as the animal you identify with.
You feel most comfortable dressed as your animal identity. If you’re a therian, you may feel drawn to dress like your animal identity, or theriotype. Some therians create elaborate animal costumes, while some use small accessories, like ears or tails. Whatever your preference, you feel most like your true self when you’re dressed as an animal.
You’re called to your theriotype’s natural habitat. Therians often feel most at home when they’re in their theriotype’s habitat. For example, if you’re a wolf therian, you may feel most like yourself in the forest. If you’re a horse, you may prefer to spend your time in open meadows or pastures. You feel more at ease in your animal’s habitat than in human environments. Lots of people feel at ease in nature, so that alone isn’t enough to determine if you’re a therian. However, if you feel called to behave as your theriotype would, it could be a sign that you’re a therian.
You mentally shift into an animal state. While therians can’t physically shift into their animal identity, some experience psychological changes where they feel themselves “shifting” into their animal. You may notice changes in your thought patterns, feel phantom limbs (like claws and tails), or even dissociate and feel like you’re present in your animal’s habitat. For example, if you’re a cat therian, you may feel like you have fur or a tail or feel like you need to meow instead of speak. These shifts sometimes happen when you’re awake, but many therians report experiencing them in their dreams.
You remember your past life as your animal identity. Many therians believe they identify with their theriotype because they were that animal in a past life. You may recall your past life in dreams or during meditation. If you repeatedly visualize yourself as a certain animal, it could be a sign that animal is your theriotype.
Are therians and furries the same thing?
No, therians and furries are not the same thing. While there can be overlap between the two, therians are people who feel a strong connection with a non-human animal on a psychological or spiritual level. Furries are people interested in cartoon or anthropomorphic animals who often create their own animal character, or fursona). Someone may be both a furry and a therian, as the two identities are not mutually exclusive.
