CHENNAI: A 20-year-old brick kiln supervisor died after a gang of three in an auto, smashed his head with a cricket bat at Red Hills on Sunday night. The gang, while attempting to flee, ran over three sleeping teenage boys and was eventually caught and beaten up by local residents.Police said that K Karunakaran, the brick kiln supervisor from Thandalkeni was standing near GNT Road and talking to a few friends when an auto driven by Arun Kumar (24) brushed past them. Soon, an argument broke out and the auto driver was beaten up.In a fit of rage, Arun Kumar rushed home and came back a few minutes later with his brother Bala (22) and uncle Pushparaj (44). Noticing Arun Kumar arriving in the auto, Karunakaran and his friends took to their heels. The auto driver chased Karunakaran, caught him near the supervisor’s relative’s house, where he had come for a function and attacked him with a cricket bat, police said. Karunakaran reportedly fell on the road unconscious. As Arun Kumar and his two relatives tried to flee the spot in their auto, they ran over three teenagers — class X student K Ajith Kumar (16), eighth grader R Manikandan (13) and P Hariharasudhan (15), who were sleeping outside the victim’s relative’s house, police said. Meanwhile, neighbours who heard the teenagers cry for help, caught the trio and bashed them up before handing them over to the police at around 1.30 am on Monday. The three teenagers, Arun Kumar and his two relatives and Karunakaran were admitted to Government General Hospital,where the supervisor died, police said.
