The relentless rainfall in Marathwada over the past two days has claimed 12 lives, battering Parbhani, Hingoli and Nanded districts and destroying crops across 5,08,068 hectares.

The sudden and intense rain has left many areas reeling, with more than half of the revenue divisions in the region recording extreme rainfall events. Swollen rivers and streams have led to flooding, washing away roads, submerged fields, and cutting off numerous villages from the rest of the region.

The situation is particularly dire in Beed, Nanded, Parbhani and Latur districts.

AUTHORITIES ADVISE CAUTION

The downpour has caused 12 lives, one each from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, Jalna, Hingoli, Beed and Latur, and several more feared dead. The number is expected to rise as reports from remote areas come in.

In Nanded district alone, 36 hours of continuous rain have left many areas submerged, with authorities forced to release water from reservoirs to manage the overflow. The situation is critical, prompting district authorities to issue warnings and advisories to residents in affected areas.

Nanded District Collector Abhijit Raut has urged citizens to remain vigilant, particularly those living near rivers, dams and water reservoirs. The constant inflow of water has pushed reservoir levels to the brink, forcing authorities to open floodgates to manage the situation. The district administration is closely monitoring the situation, with disaster management teams, agriculture officials, and police on high alert to help wherever necessary.

The heavy rainfall has led to the collapse of 21 houses in the region. The persistent rain has raised concerns about further flooding, with the potential for even more water to be released from reservoirs if the downpour continues.

FARMERS STARING AT HUGE LOSSES

Farmers in Marathwada are facing enormous losses as 4,96,392 hectares of dryland crops and 11,497 hectares of irrigated land severely damaged. The rain has affected more than six lakh farmers, leaving many with ruined crops and little hope for recovery.

The impact of the flooding has been felt across 1,454 villages in Marathwada, where 169 livestock have perished and 621 animals have been injured or affected by the rising waters.

The Marathwada region, which has historically been prone to droughts, is now grappling with an excess of rain, posing a new set of challenges for both the authorities and residents. With the monsoon far from over, there is growing anxiety about the potential for further damage and loss of life.
