As many as 19 persons were injured after a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus rammed a private bus on the Udumalai Road near Pollachi on Tuesday.
Near Thippam patti, the driver of the private bus, bound for Pollachi from Palani, suddenly applied the breaks to avoid a collision with a tempo approching from the opposite direction.
Owing to the sudden braking, a TNSTC bus and a car trailing the private bus rammed the vehicle.
Local residents soon alerted the 108 ambulance services and the injured were rushed to the Pollachi government hospital.
The accident hit traffic on the route for over an hour.
The injured, including passengers on both the buses, were identified as Tirumalaisamy (48), Iqbal (23), ShahulHameed (20), Rajeswari (28), Sathish (31), Vaitheeswari (18), Angathaal (65), Thangavel (58), Palanisamy (29), Mariyammal (60), Jayaprakash (30), Jaganathan (34), Murugan (43), Dhanraj (36), Palanisamy (31), Rajammal (60), Krishnasamy (48), Dhurkadevi (21) and Petchi Durai (47), the TNSTC bus driver. Similarly, five others who sustained severe injuries, PetchiDurai, Angathaal, Jaganathan, Murugan and Jayaprakash, were undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Pollachi government hospital. Fortunately, none of the passengers of the car were injured.
Police sources said the TNSTC bus could have been driven in a rash manner, leading to the accident. Mangkalam police registered a case.
