Siwan: Just two days after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced complete liquor ban in Bihar, the after effects are visible in the state. Hospitals and clinics have reported a sudden rise in admission of alcoholics who are facing withdrawal symptoms.
"As soon as I stopped consuming alcohol, my body started shivering. Then I was admitted to hospital," said a patient.
Such statements and cases are visible across the state. Another patient said, "I have been drinking alcohol for a long time now. When I stopped consuming alcohol, I fell ill."
All bars, wine shops and outlets selling alcohol were sealed by the government soon after the Nitish Kumar government announced total prohibition in the state on April 5. Though the government doesn't have exact figures, hospitals says thousands of patients are receiving medical treatment since the ban.
Nitish Kumar fulfilled his election promise by ordering a complete ban on liquor. While country-made liquor was already prohibited in rural areas across the state since April 1, 2016, the Chief Minister announced that Foreign Made Indian Liquor, too, has been banned with immediate affect.
"Alcoholics face certain withdrawal symptoms when they stop consuming liquor. The symptoms are minor in most cases but sometimes they tend to be severe," said a doctor.
The government has proposed setting up alcohol de-addiction centres in all the districts of Bihar. But till the infrastructure is up and running, the state's hospitals and clinics will continue to face the pressure.
