TIRUPUR: Three North Indian youths have been detained in connection with the Tirupur Alukkas heist, in which 38 kg of gold jewellery worth `12 crore was stolen recently. They were detained in West Bengal near Jharkhand border on Sunday by a special police team.The jewellery was stolen by a gang of burglars who gained entry into the Alukkas showroom on Kumaran Road here on the night of February 20. They were able to break open the ventilator of the buildings at its rear side.Following the incident, 18 special teams were formed by the district police to speed up the investigation. Based on clues from the spot, police strongly suspected the involvement of North Indian youths. Police teams were sent to West Bengal, Jharkhand and Orissa.Police suspect that seven persons are involved in the heist. The special teams are camping in West Bengal to arrest the others and to recover the jewellery, police sources said.
