New Delhi: All private engineering and management colleges in Uttar Pradesh will now have to implement the quota system. The government has awarded 50 per cent reservation for backward castes.
A Government Order said that private colleges will have to follow reservation norms set by the Government for the colleges had given a written undertaking at the time of affiliation stating they would follow all the rules and regulations formulated by the Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU).
Private colleges had earlier approached the High Court against the order but the High Court refused to stay it. The Supreme Court had left it to the private colleges to decide whether they wanted to follow the quota system or not after the Allahabad High Court suspended the order in 2007.
However, the Government - after taking a legal view on the issue - came to the conclusion that since all private colleges had given a written undertaking, they (private colleges) now had no other choice but to implement the quota system.
Over 2 lakh students had appeared for the State Entrance Examination (SEE) organised by the UPTU for admission to various engineering and technical courses run by over 500 private and government technical institutes in the state.
