PUDUCHERRY: A total of 96 poor families have got new and bigger houses in multi-storeyed tenements at Kurusukuppam, after the houses they were residing in were bulldozed and renovated by the Slum Clearance Board, after availing of funds under JNNURM. Chief Minister N Rangasamy distributed the keys of the houses to the beneficiaries, at a function held on the commercial tax office premises, in the presence of housing minister N G Paneerselvam and MLA K Lakshminarayanan, on Thursday. In all, 168 houses in 14 multi-storey tenements had been taken up for construction at an estimated cost of Rs7 crore. Out of that, 96 houses in eight tenements have been completed. The Slum Clearance Board also proposes to take up reconstruction of quarters for municipal workers numbering 120 in eight blocks, as the conditions of these houses were not good, officials said.
