Brilliant actors moved to the sound of scintillating music in Nicholas production’s ‘I wanna be MJ’, leaving the audiences wanting more. What was challenging about the play was that the actors had to sing while acting or even dancing. It was a musical, but a different one for sure. It was evident right from the word ‘go’ that the crew had put in a lot of work into the play. The story revolves around the lead character Michael, whose only passion is to become a renowned dancer like Michael Jackson (MJ). Michael (aka Mike) shares his first name with the King of Pop, but that doesn’t seem to be good enough for his parents, who want him to study medicine and become a doctor like themselves. As days passby, Michael meets Jackie (his love interest), but the phase comes to an end soon and they part ways. The songs seemed to have been carefully chosen to suit each scene. The play opened with little Mike grooving to Beat it.... It then moved on to They don’t care about us..., with a bunch of school-going- rebels breaking into the well known number. They also performed to Bad... and when Steve (Mike’s best friend) and Mike fall out, they boogied to The way you make me feel.... Also, in a few scenes like the one in which stripling Mike tries to woo the gorgeous Jackie, they slow-danced to Remember the time... and more. What the cast ensured, and that too admirably, was that their song and dance routines, although impressive, did not make the audience lose their focus from the play’s plot. All that one took home from the play was a good one-and-a-half hour’s memories of the dancing legend. This good bunch of entertaining actors not just performed but also passed the message that love, friendship, loyalty and patience are the qualities that everyone should possess. Having said that, what disappointed everyone was that the famous dance move of the iconic performer- the moonwalk -was missing!
