New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has opened a major front in Punjab by launching Supreme Court Lawyer HS Phoolka as its Lok Sabha candidate from Ludhiana.
Phoolka has been the face of the 1984 riots legal battle and has a strong emotional support base. He had been engaged by the SGPC which is under the ruling Shiromani Akali Dals (SAD) control.
Phoolka will stand against Congress's sitting MP and Union Information and Broadcasting minister Manish Tewari and also the Shiromani Akali Dal candidate.
Phoolka being nominated as the AAP candidate has stung Sukhbir Badal, the Punjab Deputy Chief Minister who tried to discredit him by alleging that Phoola had charged a hefty fee to fight cases on behalf of the 1984 riot case victims families.
Phoolka has now asked Sukhbir Badal to prove that he charged even a single rupee.
The Akali Dal which was banking on an anti Congress wave to get more seats than the 4 they won last time are stumped with Phoolka's nomination.
