BANGALORE: The unique selling proposition (USP) of primary health centre (PHC) of Abbigere is that it is situated just opposite the Mayor Sharadamma’s ward office. The disadvantage of this PHC is that it failed to draw the attention of either the Mayor or MLA Muniraju. The bushes and overgrown weeds on the 13-acre PHC premises itself is a testimony of elected representatives and government officials concerned. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities are kind enough to utilise the excess funds of a park to put up a walking path and concrete benches on the PHC premises. The authorities concerned did not bother to ensure the premises is cleaned after putting up the concrete benches and providing other facilities. “It looks a mini jungle. One needs to be courageous to sit on the benches or even to walk on the pathway,’’ said P S Gopalakrishnan, a resident of Vijayalakshmi Layout. Many residents of the surrounding areas want the BBMP to develop the vacant land on the premises into a park. “We have no park in the area. We want the BBMP authorities to develop this vacant land into a park. The place will be ideal not only for the residents of nearby areas but also for the patients of the PHC,’’ said a resident on condition of anonymity.Meanwhile, Sharadamma, Mayor, has assured to ensure the cleaning of weeds on the PHC premises. “I have already instructed the BBMP engineers to depute pourakarmikas to clear the weeds on the PHC premises. It will be done within a few days,’’ said Sharadamma. However, Muniraju, MLA of Nelamangala Assembly constituency, has said that the lack of funds were the reason for the lack of development of the PHC premises. “The BBMP engineers have utilised the excess funds of a park from a nearby area to put up concrete benches and pathway here. I have no idea about the exact amount spent for this purpose,’’ said Muniraju.Stating that he would strive for the development of the PHC, Muniraju has said that he wanted the government to construct a full-fledged maternity home for the benefit of people from nearby areas. “I have already requested the government to sanction funds for this purpose,’’ said Muniraju.Meanwhile, the people of Abbigere want the government or the BBMP to ensure a park on the remaining land. “We are not against the upgradation of the PHC to a maternity hospital but it will be a great help if the authorities make a provision for a park,’’ said Kumar, a senior citizen of Vijayalakshmi Layout. Will the authorities live up to the expectations of the residents of Abbigere and other areas?
