India is sending its largest ever contingent comprising 81 athletes for the Olympic Games. However, a little known fact is that officials too will be taking part in the sporting extravaganza, in a different way.
Archery coach Pallela Ravi Shanker, who works at the Andhra Pradesh Sports School, will present a research paper in the Pre-Olympic Congress to be held in Liverpool, London from July 24 to 26. Titled, “A study on the effect of acupressure for psycho-physiological balance among elite national archers of Andhra Pradesh,” it will dwell on complementary therapies in sports. According to Shankar, human body is the result of the combination of the five elements of nature. “Acupressure is essential for archers. A sound mind and a sound body can enhance the performance of an archer,” he said, adding, “theChinese have successfully followed acupuncture in their sports activities.”
He said he was successful while implementing this acupressure therapy on AP archers. “Apart from the medal aspect coordination with complementary therapies with sports, it is also a great way to build a strong personality,” he said.
A Fita level coach, Shankar has produced about 80 national medalists and two archers, N Arun Kumar and Syed Shareefuddin, have represented the country in the world championship in 2005.
