After losing her family to a cyclone, Kangana started her new life. Read how individual contributions from India donors are helping Kangana to build her life and heal others. The devastating super cyclone that hit the coastal belt of Orissa in 1999 changed many lives. One such girl was Kangana who lost her parents and was left alone with her brother, she lost both her parents but she and her brother survived the devastating cyclone.
"My parents had gone fishing and I was at home with my brother when the cyclone hit. Suddenly, everything vanished, there was not a single house left in my village. My brother was crying and I was so scared,” Kangana sadly remembers.
They were then brought to a safe tent by the district administration and referred to SOS Children’s Village in Rourkela. The SOS mother Sanjukta welcomed Kangana and her brother to the SOS family which comprised of their new siblings who too had a similar story.
"When Kangana came she was in a traumatic state. She was a shy ten-year old child who spoke very softly. She would often wake up at night and start crying. In the first few days it was quite difficult to comfort her but thank God nothing is visible of that terrible past now," mother Sanjukta says. Slowly, Kangana was happy in her new routine and forgot her traumatic past.
Now, she is a young girl working as a nurse in a renowned Hospital in Bhubaneswar. Last year, she cleared final-year examination with distinction and was offered a job in one of the best hospitals of Orissa. The young girl beams with confidence and is ready to face the world. “I want to pursue higher studies in Nursing and work for five years before settling down”, says Kangana with a smile.
