Moments after taking charge as the Mumbai Police Commissioner, Ahmed Javed said that the probe into the high profile Sheena Bora murder case will not have any effect by the change of guard.
Refusing to comment on the Sheena Bora case, Javed maintained that there is "always a scope of improvement. Improvement is our aim. The case should be handled properly and the evidence put together properly before the court."
In a sudden decision on Tuesday, the Maharashtra government decided to remove Rakesh Maria as the Mumbai Police Commissioner and elevate him as DG Home Guards and DG Civil Defence.
The transfer decision, which is being implemented with immediate effect, comes at a time when Maria was personally monitoring the Sheena Bora murder case in which TV tycoon Indrani Mukerjea is a prime accused.
Since Maria was not just overseeing the probe but also personally interrogating all witnesses and accused in the case, it might be a major jolt in the investigation.
However, the government has stated that the decision is purely a procedural one and has no bearing to a particular case. Maharashtra Home Secretary KP Bakshi claimed that the government wanted to issue immediate orders to enable him to settle down before the beginning of the festival season.
