THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The move of the UDF Government to accord sanction to start law colleges in the self-financing stream would be opposed through an intense student agitation, warned state office-bearers of the AISF here on Saturday.AISF state secretary K P Sandeep and president N Arun told reporters that the crass exploitation of students and denial of social justice as evident in the self-financed medical-engineering institutions would spread to the legal education sector also,if corporate managements were given a free run. “The government move in this regard would be defeated by all means,” they reminded.“The social achievements gained by the legal education sector of the state cannot be destroyed through a reckless decision of the government,” they said and added that as part of the agitation,a protest day would be observed in all law colleges in the state on January 30.The office-bearers also demanded cancellation of the affiliation of 23 self-financing engineering colleges not following AICTE guidelines, the report on which was filed by a High Court-appointed expert panel recently. It had been established that 23 such institutions and campuses in the state lack infrastructure, which is also in the dumps with only a meagre pass percentage of 10%.“The functioning of all self-financing institutions in the state should be put under scanner prior to admissions to various courses in the next academic year,” they demanded. The AISF has taken a highly critical view against the CPM-controlled Pariyaram Medical College also and sought a comprehensive probe into its functioning.“It is deceitful that the college which is operating on government’s land and financial support is denying seats due to the government,” they said and charged that the division of management quota seats into management and privilege seats in the Pariyaram College was intended to reap commercial gains to the hilt.
