ALUVA: The Dialysis Centre at Aluva District Hospital has become a hope for the patients suffering from end-stage renal diseases. The Aluva dialysis centre launched few months ago, has already done more than 2,100 dialysis successfully. The patients are charged only Rs 200 each at the dialysis Centre, thanks to the initiative of P Rajeev MP.The incidence of chronic renal failure has been increasing alarmingly in the state. Kidney transplantation is the most-effective treatment for chronic renal diseases. Statistics reveal that around 250 kidney transplants are being done in the state every year. The difficulty in getting matching donors and the huge cost of the surgery and post-operative treatment prevent many patients from opting for transplantation.P Rajeev MP took the initiative to revive a long- pending proposal for a dialysis centre attached to Aluva District Hospital which would be affordable to the poor. The selfless assistance of Dr N Vijayakumar was an inspiration to Rajeev to go ahead with the project. Rajeev persuaded various PSUs, private companies and social organisations to donate 12 dialyses units and other machineries and equipment for the commissioning of the dialysis centre. The project would not have materialised had the Cochin Shipyard Ltd not come forward to meet Rs 500 for each poor patient towards the medical expense of the dialyses. After knowing about the success of Aluva District Hospital Dialysis Centre, the state government decided to start four more community dialysis centres in various districts.
