BANGALORE: The Anna effect has not only seen Bangaloreans in high patriotic spirits, but the Indian flag manufacturing industry has seen the spell too. Much to their surprise, city based vendors are unable to meet the increasing demands. Says, Brijesh Sharma, owner of Sharma Flag Distributors at Wilson Garden, “The demand for the national flag has gone up by about 50 per cent, since the past one week.We are getting maximum orders from schools, companies and various other small organizations for cotton flags as they are priced low compared to the satin ones.” “The cotton flags are priced at `50-100 depending on the size and the satin ones start from `400. The stock for cotton flags is already exhausted, we just have a few of them. As of now, we are stocked with embroidered silk flags” he added. With various social organizations, activists and other civil groups taking out protest march in the city to express solidarity with Hazare, flag vendors are expecting the demand to soar up more during the weekend.“The demand is expected to rise during the weekend as a lot of protest and silent march have been planned for Sunday” he added. It is not just from city, vendors have been receiving orders from other districts as well.“We have been getting bulk orders for flags from Hassan, Davangere, Shimoga and Belgaum” said, Sanjay Khandre, manufacturer and supplier of flag.“For the past one week we are selling at least 500 flags per day. The flags are priced at `25 and goes up to a maximum of `150 per piece” he added.“Gearing up for supporting the cause we had ordered for about 2,000 cotton flags and we had to pay double than the normal price” a city based social activist said.
