CHENNAI: The strain caused by the fast seeking a strong anti-corruption law had forced some to drop out, but fasting for a few days have made them mentally strong. Despite breaking their fast for health reasons, the volunteers have been physically present at the venue on LB Road helping out other volunteers of India Against Corruption (IAC).Aravind Bharathi (18) had to withdraw due to ill health after fasting for four days. But, he inspired his entire family to participate in the protest. His grandfather Manikumar (83) had observed a day’s fast along with the volunteers. “My father Vijayakumar and uncle Murali are on relay fast for the last few consecutive days. My relative, seven-year-old Krishna Kumar, is also observing a day’s fast,” said Aravind, who is now working as an IAC volunteer at a fasting venue in Thiruvanmiyur. After college hours, Aravind visits the venue and stays there throughout the night helping those on fast.A student of social work, B Ramesh (21) was forced to withdraw from the fast due to family pressure. When his mother learnt that he was on fast, she refused to take food and had to be hospitalised.“I have withdrawn from the fast, but few days of being on it has given me mental strength. I have conducted orientation classes on the Lokpal Bill for 100 students in my college and many of those who attended the class visited the fast venue in support of Anna,” he said.Similarly, IT professional Charley Aryan (23), who fasted for more than five days, had to drop out after his office wanted him back at work. Now she too is an IAC volunteer. ”I leave only around 10 pm,” she added.Similarly, even at 64, retired employee of the Department of Atomic Energy P S Sridharan fasted for 72 hours. But, he had to withdraw due to deteriorating health. Now he works as a volunteer at the fast venue.
