KANNUR: Defence Minister A K Antony has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating relationship between Kerala and Tamil Nadu over the Mullaperiyar Dam issue.Addressing mediapersons at the Government Guest House here on Saturday, the Defence Minister said that he had discussed the issue with Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and the Central government would go ahead with its mediatory efforts to to find a peaceful settlement to the row over the dam. Despite the failure of the Government of Tamil Nadu to attend the recent meeting convened to hold talks over the dispute, the Central government would continue its efforts to resolve the issue, he said. “But, under the Federal system, the Central government can’t give orders to the states in this regard,”, said the Defence Minister, stating that the Centre was keen to find an amicable settlement. Sharing the concern of the people of Kerala over the safety of their life, Antony said that the dispute shouldn’t endanger the relationship between the two states. Underlining the need to be cautious against the issue taking a turn for the worse, the Defence Minister said that the dispute shouldn’t lead to any kind of violence or tension between the two states.
