GUNTUR: The Acharya Nagarjuna University College of Engineering is a pride institution now, getting a rare opportunity to play a part in the development of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS).The Sriharikota Research Centre of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has entrusted college principal Dr P.Siddaiah with designing a choke ring antenna to be used in the satellite. ISRO authorities have sent the project profile to him a few days ago. The Sriharikota Space Launching Centre is planning to launch seven satellites in 2014 at a cost of Rs 1,600 core. ISRO, which has depended on foreign countries for the global positioning system (GPS), has decided to launch the satellites using specialised antennas, said Siddaiah, who is now working on the project. The choke ring antenna is a particular form of omni-directional antenna of high frequencies. It consists of a number of conductive concentric cylinders around a central antenna and is highly suitable for GPS and radar applications.Dr P Siddaiah, who has to complete this project by the end of 2013, has formed a team of ten B.Tech (ECE) final-year students and ten members of the ECE teaching faculty to work on the project.“The satellites will help us in the fields of mobile telephony, flights, surface transport, intelligent highway system, oil and gas extraction, and send timely signals,’’ Siddaiah said.
