HYDERABAD: The Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) on Saturday suspended three doctors including head of the department of cardiology and medical superintendent for admitting and treating an undertrial prisoner without prison officials’ reference. NIMS director Dr. A Dharma Rakshak issued orders on Saturday suspending the three doctors - medical superintendent N Satyanarayana, cardiology department head Sarath Chandra and another doctor Sarath. Dharma Rakshak told Express that when the allegations that a team of doctors were involved in the treatment of an undertrial prisoner came to light two months ago, NIMS authorities constituted a committee comprising three senior doctors to look into the issue. ‘’We submitted the report to the state government after an inquiry basing on which it directed us to serve suspension orders on them,’’ he added. The undertrial in question was 60-year-old Jairam Reddy, who was the main accused in a double murder case. He underwent treatment for hypertension at NIMS for more than 43 days. He paid the bill of Rs 59,503 (of which Rs 58,000 was for room rent and only Rs 1,000 for medication) and walked out a free man when he got bail.
