It is a striking display in more ways than one. Called Shradhanjali, the Artist Association of Orissa paid tributes to painter Byamokesh Mohanty on the occasion of his first death anniversary by organising a group art exhibition at the Lalit Kala Akademi here.A senior painter Byamokesh had studied in Benarus Hindu University and served as faculty member at Government college of Art and Craft in Khallikote and was HoD of painting department in B K college of Art and Craft before he was appointed secretary of Orissa Lalit Kala Akademi. He died last year on June 14.The exhibition showcases paintings by students of both B K College and Government College and friends of the painter. On display are 52 paintings of contemporary, bold, experimental, realistic and interactive themes.Using a wide range of medium, the show examines the role of collective consciousness in modern art. The gallery space is used to weave a narrative of personal stories and experiences. Every work explores time and space, resembling the way the human mind chooses to recollect people, places and events.Besides, there are paintings that are all inspired by events and moments from daily life. Designed with fine aesthetic sense, the works provide an insight into the mind and motivation of the respective painters. One among them, Sangeeta Patnaik, draws a parallel between numbers and humanity through her creation in acrylic. There were paintings too on display that were essentially drawings, heavily dependent on lines and veering towards illustrations. Some of them were figurative as the painters tried to show a sense of drama by juxtaposing human and animal figures with discrepant elements.“This is not just a tribute to the great painter. It is also a celebration of Byamokesh’s dedication towards art and culture,” said organiser of the show Nigamananda Swain. The exhibition concludes on June 18.
