Sydney: An elderly Australian who missed a turn and drove 600 km in the wrong direction while out to buy a newspaper said on Wednesday that time was on his side and he wouldn't be getting a GPS to help with the navigating.
"Why would you want one of those? You can't get lost. There's no fun in that," Eric Stewart told reporters when relating his story.
His adventure began in Yass, in New South Wales, and he ended up in Geelong, Victoria.
"I didn't know where I was going but I knew it was somewhere and with a bit of luck I would eventually find my wife again," the 81-year-old happy wanderer said. "When you get to 80 and beyond it doesn't matter much."
Stewart, staying with friends in Yass, popped out to buy a paper before breakfast and took a wrong turn.
Nine hours later he concluded he was lost. Spotting a police car at a service station, he asked for directions. The police contacted his wife and Stewart drove the 600 km back to Yass on Tuesday.
