BANGALORE: Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has issued an ultimatum to the corporation's health centres, hospitals, nursing homes, blood banks and laboratories to comply with the Centre's rules on biomedical waste and procure a license for the same by June 30,2011.The Centre issued a directive on December 15, 2010 asking health centres to comply with the Bio-Medical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1998 Act by January 31, 2011. Despite the notification, BBMP officials observed that some health centres have not yet procured a license. In a press release, BBMP has ordered the health centres to obtain a license by the end of June.There are six referral hospitals, 24 maternity homes, 29 health centres and 16 dispensaries that come under the corporation's jurisdiction.“Most of them have completed the procedure of obtaining a license and are complying with the rules on biomedical waste. There are some small health centres that handle less than 1,000 cases and they have not obtained the license yet. We are making sure they abide by the rules too,” confirmed Dr Manjula, Health Officer, Bangalore West, BBMP.The corporation has said that according to the Municipal Act 1976, Section 374, all BBMP health centres must obtain the license.If they fail to do so, the corporation has decided to take strict action against them.The Deputy Commissioner (Health) has specified the procedure to obtain the license from the Corporation.For new health centres to obtain a license, they need to submit copies of their revenue receipts, permission letters from the owners of the health centre and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board. Meanwhile old health centres need to submit the license fee along with the Solid Waste Distribution fee and a permission letter from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board.
