Bengal Town Demands Renaming Of Traffic Junction After RG Kar Victim

The RG Kar Hospital has been in the headlines following the tragic death of a postgraduate trainee doctor at its premises. The incident triggered nationwide outrage. A large scale of people have been protesting since then. After the tragic incident, the Sodepur came up in everyone’s mind. The incident has shaken the whole state and the country, and the agitation is going on across several places. The remnants of that agitation have been seen in the Sodepur Panihati area, as well.

This time, the citizens who joined the movement demanded to change the name of the most important traffic junction of Sodepur to Tilottama junction by posting posters on various social media platforms. Posters of changing the name of this traffic junction are already seen in the area. The incident shook the entire state, and it is proposed to change the name of this junction. So that people can at least remember the brutal incident that happened to the young doctor.

Neerta Mukherjee, head teacher of the victim’s school, Chandrachur High School for Girls, said, “The victim was known as a meritorious student of the area. Therefore, if it is proposed to change the name of the traffic junction in her memory after such a tragic end, I see no objection. Roads and important junctions are named after sages and virtues in different parts of the state.”

This teacher also believed that standing at this junction, where thousands of people travel every day using this important road in the Sodepur area, will give strength to fight against the torture of the young doctor and her rapists.

Apart from continuing the movement to protect the dignity of women, former Chandrachud High School Sumita Roy said that she is grateful to those who are proposing to change the name of this traffic intersection. This traffic junction is known to thousands of people who travel from Madhyamgram to Sodepur as well as BT Road. But, since the RG Kar case, people have come to know about the tragic fate of the girl in this area. If this traffic junction is renamed, people will remember her through this place.

When the victim’s family was contacted about the matter, they said that it was troubling them. Besides, they did not want to give any response. Not only that but various important areas in different parts of the district have also been named Tilottama. Out of which, it is said that the agitators from Naihati to Ashoknagar, Habra, Barasat, the border town of Bangaon, and other vast areas have also given this name.

Following the attack on the protest march in the Barrackpore’s Naihati, the place is called Tilottama. The place is also seen in Naihati with this name on Google Maps. Be it the name or the place, the people of the state do not want to forget this atrocious incident in any way until the real culprit is revealed.
