Mumbai: Security has been tightened in and around the Lilavati Hospital, where Amitabh Bachchan is recuperating after intestinal surgery, as it was breached on Saturday when a TV reporter sneaked into the ICU to check up on the star.

Bachchan has been placed under 'Z' category security and the "intruism" has shocked the hospital and the family of the megastar.

A large number of policemen have been placed in and outside the hospital following the incident, which evoked "strong and angry" reactions from the Bachchans. Two security personnel have been suspended in connection with the incident.

Reacting to the breach of security, Samajwadi Party MP Amar Singh who is also a family friend of the Bachchans, has accused the TV reporter of endangering the superstar's life.

"The media has been largely cooperative, but such incident is unwanted," Singh said, adding, "this post-operative phase is

the most crucial period for any patient and such incidents can be fatal for him."

Meanwhile, Bachchan who is still in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital, continued to show improvement and his condition is stable according to the doctors attending him.

The hospital sources said he was responding well to the treatment and all parameters of his health were normal.

They, however, declined to confirm when the megastar will be shifted out of the ICU and allowed oral intake of fluids.

The 63-year-old actor has been on intravenous fluids, vitamins and antibiotics since he was operated successfully for perforations in the small intestine, known as diverticulitis in medical parlance, on Wednesday.

After preliminary investigation and treatment for abdominal pain in New Delhi's Escorts Heart Institute, Mr Bachchan was flown to the city on Monday and straightaway hospitalised here. After a series of tests for two days, he was operated by a team of three surgeons.
