Bishop refuses to cooperate with probe

The committee constituted by the Episcopal Synod of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church to look into the allegations raised by former Metropolitan of Idukki diocese Kuriakose Mar Clemis, is literally defunct with the bishop reportedly continuing his non-cooperation with the commission.   Besides,  Mar Clemis had also approached the High Court, seeking police protection.

Mar Clemis had been removed from his responsibilities after he embarrassed the Church leadership by raising allegation that a section of the top brass was against him and that his life was in danger.

Mar Clemis also alleged that he was elevated to the post of bishop three years ago after paying `3 crore to the Church higher-ups.

According to sources, Mar Clemis  has expressed no confidence in the Synod-appointed panel. “He has also raised allegations against  members of the committee,” said sources.

The committee, headed by Synod secretary Joseph Mar Gregorios, has Metropolitans Mathews Mar Ivanios and Geevarghese Mar Koorilose, Baby Chamakalayil Cor Episcopa, Baby John Aikatuthara Cor Episcopa,  M A Paulose and Biby Abraham as members.

Mar Clemis, who is now staying at a centre in Idukki district has not appeared before the committee, though he had been summoned.

He also refused to stay at a retreat centre in Kottayam district where he was provided accommodation by the Church authorities till the inquiry is completed.

However, Joseph Mar Gregorios said that the investigation was in  progress.

“Metropolitan Mar Clemis  did not respond to the first summons issued by the committee. We will serve notice on him again,” said Mar Gregorios.

He also said that the petition filed by Mar Clemis before the High Court would not affect the investigation by the committee.
